In spite of the fact that it is the middle of winter, I’m reviewing a new Nars Spring 2019 Palette. And, it’s freezing outside, and I’ve been inside, sick with the flu. (I did have a flu shot)! I’m playing with the new, limited edition, Nars Skin Deep EyeShadow Palette. In fact, this is the first Spring eyeshadow palette I’ve seen. Lately, Nars has come out with a massive amount of products. For example, the Nars 2018 Holiday Collection was vast. Also, the new Nars Super Radiant Booster is part of their Spring Collection. Both products, the Super Radiant Booster, in a universal shade, and the Skin Deep Palette, which is nice and neutral, are geared for all skin tones. In other words, it appears that Nars is creating makeup that will work on everyone.
To begin with, the Nars Spring Collection works on everyone, then it would be the first collection of its kind. For instance, some makeup companies show a product’s color swatches on three different arms. One arm has a light skin tone. The next arm has a medium skin tone, and the third arm has a dark skin tone. So far, I haven’t found one palette that looks great on all three arms at the same time. I think that would be pretty difficult. Why? Because, not only do we need products that look good on our skin’s tone, they also have to look good on our skin tone’s undertones.
Moreover, the Nars Skin Deep EyeShadow Palette includes everything you’ll need to shape, highlight, and define you eyes and your brows.

Nars Skin Deep EyeShadow Palette Packaging
The outer box is….. eh. First, a gold metallic base had a patina glazed on top.
Furthermore, the patina glaze gave the gold metallic base a black, gold, and coppery-orange burnished finish.
Although, the Nars compact hasn’t changed. This is because Nars still uses the same black rubberized material that they’ve used for years. I like the cushiony, silky feel of the compact. In addition,the compact looks sleek and modern.
Once opened, the palette has a full-sized mirror on one side, and 12 eye shadows on the other. I always say, palettes need to have mirrors in them. Otherwise, they aren’t good for travel. Also, the palette has 12 shades. The top row, across, has four shades. Also important, these four shades are three times larger than the rest of the palette shades. The reason for this, I’m thinking, is the top four shades are the ones Nars thinks we’ll use the most. Therefore, we should be happy that they were considerate enough to make those eye shadows bigger. The other reason, I think, it is possible that you can wear the four top shades on your face. For example, you can mix the shades, and use them as blush, highlighter, and contour powders.
Nars Skin Deep EyeShadow Palette Formula
To start with, Nars Skin Deep Palette’s formula, called Nars Pigment Powder Suspension Technology, is new. As a result, the eyeshadows have rich, long-wearing, high-impact color. Moreover, the shadows’ velvety texture blends easily. As a result, the color is smooth and even. Also, it doesn’t flake or crease. Finally, the shadows are easy to apply and long-wearing.
Nars Skin Deep EyeShadow Palette Shades
The Palette has three shades that are re-promotes. They are : Sophia, Bali, and Coconut Grove. The other nine shades are new. However, some of them sound really familiar. Unbuttoned sounds really familiar to me. If I didn’t have the flu, I’d do a little more research.
Row 1 Across (Left to Right)
The shades in the first row are three times larger than the shades in the rest of the palette. First, Taunt is a banana-cream shade with a matte finish. Use Taunt as a highlighter under your eyes, and on your brow bones. Also, use it to diffuse, and blend out, other shades. Next, Sophia is a rich cool brown shade with a matte finish. I like this shade as a transition color on your crease.
Then, Whipped is a warm brown shade with a matte finish. Whipped is another shade that looks great in your crease, and on the outer corner of your eyes. Last, Undressed is a taupe brown shade with a matte finish. Again, use Whipped as a transition color. Also, use it on the outer corner of your eyes. Also, it would look good under your lower lash line.
Row 2 Across (Left to Right)
First, Bali is a deep, neutral taupe shade with a matte finish. You can wear bali in your crease as a transition color, on the outer corners of your eyes, and on your lower lash line. Second, Icon is a rosey gold shade with a shimmering finish. However, on me, Icon looks a bit peachy. Also, on me, Icon is light. Therefore, I would wear it on my eyelids, as a highlighter, on my brow bones, and in the inner corners of my eyes.
Next, Basic Instinct is an icey rose shade with a shimmering finish. You can wear Basic Instinct on your eyelids, as a highlighter, and in the corners of your eyes. Last, Coconut Grove is a deep brown shade with a matte finish. This shade looks great on the outer corners of your eyes. Also, I like this shade for lining your upper and lower lash lines.
Row 3 Across (Left to Right)
To start, Centerfold is a grey beige shade with a shimmering finish. I love this shade on the eyelids. Also, it would look great under your lower lashes. (Use a black pencil in your waterline.) Next, Calendar Girl is a golden brown shade with a shimmering finish. Calendar Girl is a beautiful shade to put on your eyelids.
And, Faster Pussycat is a copper shade with a shimmering finish. It is a great shade for your eyelids.I’d even use it on my lower lash lines. Finally, Unbuttoned is a deep brown shade with a shimmering finish. Unbuttoned looks great on the outer corners of your eyes. Also, use it as an eyeliner.
Nars Skin Deep EyeShadow Palette Last But Not Least…….
I love the shadows in this palette. However, I have a medium-olive skin tone with a neutral undertone. Also,Nars uses Naomi Campbell as the face of the Nars Skin Deep EyeShadow Palette. Furthermore, it looks awesome on her! (What wouldn’t?) So, we know the palette looks good on the medium, and dark tones. Well, isn’t it supposed to look great on everyone? I do not think it would look great on the fairest of the fair skin tones. Nor would it look good on light skin tones. The reason is, I think the depth of the colors, and the undertones of the colors , which are perfect for my medium skin, and Naomi’s dark skin, will be too deep for those of you with porcelain complexions. Medium and Dark complexions can handle the bounce between warm and cool tones.
Furthermore
Furthermore, because this palette looks like so many of the neutral palettes that I have,(and I’m sure you have), think about what you need this palette to do for you. Say to yourself “I’m buying this for travel because it has everything in it I need for my eyes and brows.” Or, are you buying it because it has the right shades to line, define, and highlight your eyes and brows?
Finally
Finally, the concept of the palette, which is it is meant to be everything to everyone, isn’t quite there yet. It doesn’t work for the fair skin tones. The reason is it isn’t bright enough! In fact, the colors are way too dark!
However, it shows that Nars is working towards creating products for everyone. And, that’s a good thing. The thing is, there are palettes out there that are made for the fairest of the fairs. I’ve purchased many a palette where the colors don’t have enough pigments, or they are too light for my medium skin. Yet, there are plenty of palettes out there for the medium girls, the tan girls, and the dark skin tones. (Think Pat McGrath) (Jeffree Star)(Juvia’s Place)(Natasha Denona)
The palette does have a lot of positives. First, the layout of the palette is beautiful. I love that the shades are neutral enough to show up on me. Usually, it is difficult for me to find neutral palettes that work for medium, tan and dark skin tones. I always feel that we are the ones that are usually undervalued and under marketed. It is a great palette to take with you on a vacation. You can even use the top four shades as face powders. And, I love the new formula. Finally, the shadows can be used dry or wet. Use them wet if you want more impact.

Nah girl… there are not ‘plenty’ of palettes for dark or deep skin. I dare you to name 10 palettes from mainstream brands (those found in Ulta or Sephora) for each skin tone . You’ll quickly find out how difficult it is to name 10 much less ‘plenty’ when factoring quality, price and matching undertones etc for dark/deep skin tone. Nice commentary overall but you need be more aware of the makeup industry and marketing before making such a blanket statement.
Thank you for your comments. I would try Huda’s eye shadows, all of her palettes are pigmented, and fabulous. Juvia’s Place (now at Ulta) is made specifically for darker skin tones, she has a lot of palettes. Natasha Denona has deep pigmented palettes, so does Urban Decay, Fenty, Black Up, Etc. Also, Mac has many palettes for darker complected tones, as does Nars. Also,, most mainstream makeup is either owned by Shiseido,Estee Lauder, Revlon, or other conglomerates, you’d be surprised who owns what. Go into Ulta and see all the new brands they are carrying, or will be soon, the new brands are owned by Shiseido! You don’t have to limit yourself to just mainstream brands anymore. Brands like Jeffree Star, who makes amazing palettes for all skin tones, even Tom Ford has some spectacular Palette for all skin tones. I even think Marc Jacobs does a pretty good job with some universal makeup palettes, for all skin tones. I am someone who prefers the darker, more pigmented palettes. The palettes for fair skin tones don’t even show up on me. So I am always looking for the dark skin toned makeup myself! My suggestion to you is to look beyond the few big brands, and look at the newer, more avant guard brands. Because, there are plenty of palettes for darker skin tones. Even makeup Forever has an enormous range of foundation shades for all skin tones. Laura Geller in Ulta also has beautiful shades for all skin tones. Even Estee Lauder has palettes, try one of Violette’s Capsule Collection Palettes, they are awesome (Blue Dahlia for one thing) Also, I’ve seen Violette make up Dark toned women in her Poppy Savauge Videos for Estee Lauder. That’s another great collection for all skin tones. Also, the new Berries and Cream Palette by Dominique at Sephora is another great palette. Thank you so much for your comments. I was not shrugging the medium, medium to tan, tan, dark and deep girls. I am one of them. I was feeling sorry the fair skinned girls when it comes to this one particular Nars palette. Lancome is another brand that does palettes for all skin tones. If you watch HSN, You’ll see that the spokeswoman for Lancome has a deep skin tone. Also, it doesnt need to be just Ulta and Sephora who carry mainstream brands, how about Beautylish? Nordstroms? Macy’s, Bloomingdales? Free People has makeup now, as does Anthropology, Revolve.com has makeup. Space N.K. is also in Bloomingdales, to try other brands. Actually, we are pretty lucky to be living in this day and age. When I was younger, there were only those very few brands on the marketplace, unless you wanted drugstore brands. I remember Flori Roberts catered to darker complexions in the 70’s, in department stores, but there were really only Lancome, Revlon, Estee Lauder, Elizabeth Arden and Clinique. Chanel came later. Now, we have so many brands to choose from. Don’t limit yourself to mainstream brands, there are inexpensive brands, like OFRA, that have great pigmented products, with great formulas and a great price.
