Are you looking for an alternative to the classic, and somewhat staid, shaded eye look? Troy Surratt, professional makeup artist and founder of Surratt Beauty, wanted to explore new textures in eye makeup. Hence, Surratt became inspired by Japanese Beauty. His inspiration came from a traditional lacquer technique called urushi. As a result, the urushi technique inspired the creation of the Surratt Beauty Lid Lacquers.
You can find Surratt Beauty Lid Lacquers at Sephora and Barneys, Space NK and Blue Mercury. They retail for $36.
In general, the eye gloss category has been popular for a number of years as a result of our obsession with glossy eyelids. Pros began using eye gloss on their models in fashion shows in 2015. However, the pros used lip gloss and skin salves to create the look. Therefore,, makeup brands began creating eye gloss. One of the first was Mac Makeup’s Studio Eye Gloss In Black and White. Not all eye glosses are created equal! Many, including the Mac Studio Gloss, were sticky. Last year, Jillian Dempsey created Lid Tints. Lid Tints are not sticky. Although, they are color tints for your lids, not high-gloss vinyl. Finally, Troy Surratt has taken the eye gloss category to a whole new level!
Surratt Beauty Lid Lacquers – Packaging

First of all, Surratt Beauty is a luxurious, high-end brand. The packaging says it all. To begin with, the small square lacquered box is tres chic. In addition, a thin band of red paper, that says Lid Lacquer, surrounds the box.

Slide it off, and take off the lid.
Inside the box, you’ll find black tissue paper wrapped around the box. held together with a Surratt sticker.

I ask you, who goes to all this trouble? Only a luxury cosmetic brand!

Opened, the small square , black compact holds a mirror on one side, and the lid gloss on the other.
Surratt Beauty Lid Lacquers – Formula
To begin with, the formula is as elegant as the packaging. It was brought about from the traditional Japanese technique urushi. Troy Surratt recreated a similar effect with these lid glosses. The formula features intense pigments that are in an extremely moisturizing, dewy base.
These lid glosses stand out for two reasons. One, they are not sticky. And, two, they don’t “melt away to nothingness” “they don’t slip!”
Furthermore, the color goes on sheer. Then, it builds easily to a more opaque, vinyl-like finish.
Surratt Beauty Lid Lacquers – Shades
Surratt’s goal was to create a universal palette that works on many different skin tones. Therefore, he created a few neutral shades. Therefore, the eight shades include:
Kira Kira- a crystalline gloss
Hadaka – glistening sand
Shu Iro – urushi red
Satou Ume – sugared plum
Kogecha – melted chocolate
Komugi – gleaming taupe
Pika Pika – galactic black
Shikkoku- black lacquer
To illustrate, the shades I purchased are Hadaka, Satou Ume, Kogecha, and Pika Pika.

Surratt Beauty Lid Lacquers – Application

In order to apply the Lid Lacquers, anything goes! First, if you use your fingertips , you can create a more diffused wash of color. In other words, the color will look like a stain. However, if you want a vinyl-like look that has deep opacity, you can use a synthetic lid brush, or a lid sponge.
Surratt Beauty Lid Lacquers – Last But Not Least………………..
Since 2015, we are still having our lustrous lid moments! The reason for this is the high gloss effect is a modern alternative to the same old, traditional eye shadow! Don’y you agree that it is always nice to have alternatives? I’m up for discussion in the comments below!
