It’s that time, Again. A New Year is on our Horizon – 2017. Although the actual date is arbitrary, New Years Day represents a definite, concrete point that gives us the green light and a shot in the arm to make changes in our lives. But, what usually happens is, we make our New Years Resolutions on New Years Eve. By the middle of January, most of us have fallen short,in other words, we’ve blown it! It happens to 92% of us.
New Years Resolutions sound great in theory, but most of us strike out before we even begin. Why do we fail right from the start?
We say one thing , but mean another. We say we want to do something, but we don’t feel it. In order for us to succeed we’d have to feel that we would do almost anything to achieve our goals, and we don’t, strike 1.
People have different standards for the way they treat their minds and bodies. Smokers know that smoking is bad for their health, yet they don’t really want to give it up. Same with people who overeat. In order to succeed, people need to hold themselves to a higher standard, and only then will they stop doing something they shouldn’t. Strike 2.
Our whole heart isn’t into the attempt, so we’ll fail the first time our willpower is challenged. To prevent this from happening, always put yourself in a situation where you can’t go back! Get rid of those cigarettes that you were hiding for a rainy day! Strike 3.
Make sure your reasons are backed by your Strong Desire and they align with your values and beliefs.
“That’s Just Who I Am!” You can’t make changes if you go against your beliefs about yourself. If you choose these lifelong beliefs you’re resolution will contradict those beliefs and you will fail! I think you just struck out!
If you are really serious about making your New Year Resolution materialize,. set yourself up with a New Years Resolution Contract. In it, state your specific goals-the ones you want to accomplish this year. 
Recognize that you are obligated and duty-bound to these goals. Goals are easier to achieve when someone is in your corner, and can provide you with the support you need to reach your goals. Choose someone and ask them to be a witness to this contract and provide you with their support. List a few rewards for achieving the goals and list the consequences for failing to achieve these goals.
Another way to make your Resolutions stick is tell people about your plans. Sharing your goals with people will help keep you on track.
Look at your resolutions. Be honest with yourself and find your weak spots. Don’t fall into the trap of just wishing for something. If you do, you will never make progress, and again you will fail. Progress is growth. Growth is life, so aim for personal growth!
On New Years Eve, as the clock strikes midnight – Say goodbye to 2016. ” Thank you 2016 for all the lessons I’ve learned.” “2017………I’m Ready!”
